Overview
Gatwick 1935
On 29 March 1920, the transfer of commercial flights from Hounslow to Croydon Airport began, the official opening of which did not take place until 31 March 1921. By the mid-1930s Croydon proved inadequate and on 6 June 1936 Gatwick Airport was inaugurated on the site of an aerodrome dating from 1930. Hendon and Croydon closed in 1968 and 1959 respectively. Too small and too close to urban areas to expand, Croydon Airport was sentenced.
