After the abandonment of the LZ128 considered too unambitious, this new project found its financing thanks to the creation, on March 22, 1935, of the Deutsche Zeppelin-Reederei (DZR), under the patronage of the German Minister of Air Transport5.

This new company will gather the funds coming from the parent company Luftschiffbau Zeppelin and those of the Hamburg-America Linie.
